Cloth Diapers: Natural Care for Baby and Avoiding Harmful Substances

I’m a 90’s babe and I was raised rolling around in every chemical additive and GMO snack you can think of and here I am doing just fine…so far… my husband does think I am crazy so, there is that. But with the rise of information on certain substances that have been shown to disrupt our body or even harm it and as I began to wonder how we as humans are made to thrive in a natural world, I began a journey to try to make and choose products and practices that are as close to Mother Earth as I can fit into my life.

(I am by far not the most crunchy mom – we just finished off a pack of Oreos this week and who knows how they make those so dang tasty. It is such a process of trial and error and research, that it takes time to find natural products and foods that work for you. For example, I went through many trials and many armpit rashes to come up with my recipe for the best natural deodorant that really works.)

When it came to my tiny little baby, I wanted to try to nourish her as much as naturally possible while she was in the womb, which included a bucket of KFC fried chicken around month three of pregnancy, and when she came out to greet this wonderful, natural earth! So, when it came to something that would literally be on her body almost 24/7 – HER DIAPER – I felt quite motivated to find one that was made with materials as close to Mother Earth as I could find. That definitely included some disposable options. But whether choosing cloth diapers made of hemp, cotton and organic materials or even ones made of microfiber and other materials, it made sense that something reusable and washable, where you can control what detergents and soaps you use and put on your baby every day could be a good option.

Some Potentially Harmful Substances

Many disposable diapers are made and bleached with Dioxin, which “in animal studies, dioxins have caused nerve damage, birth defects, increased rates of miscarriages and changes to the immune system.” And the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has classified dioxins as a probable human carcinogen (cancer causing chemical). This is something to consider as well as the use of Sodium Polyacrylate in diapers – the super absorbent gel substance in diapers – which was removed from tampons in 1985 after being found to cause toxic shock syndrome from bacterial growth… but are still in diapers! (Though, I must note that with external exposure to Sodium Polyacrylate, no risk to babies has been found in studies. But for me that a little too close to the same sensitive region -Eek!)

Go Natural When You Can

Overall, when it comes to the different chemicals and materials used in conventional disposable diapers, even with studies that show low risks to out little wonders, I worry that over time there may be more connections between these elements and some health problems we face today. So, why take the risk and why not get as close to Mother Nature as we can and ask for and seek to grow in awareness!
