What Do I Need for Baby? My Full Amazon Baby Registry Checklist

Trying to think of what you need for a baby can be quite the feat, especially if you don’t hang out around babies much…until soon! Ultimately, baby needs YOU and you are equipped to take care of this little one with your love and even with limited resources. I love browsing Facebook Marketplace and secondhand stores for items at a fraction of the cost, but Amazon is just so wonderfully easy. I loved doing my baby registry through them and that I could also add items from others stores. It is a wonder that family and friends want to gift you items you need for your little wonder! Before being overwhelmed by everything you need, tap into that thought of wonder and gratitude for yourself and consider passing it along and supporting expectant parents in your community who may need resources through local organizations, faith communities or pregnancy centers!

What stuff do I even need for a baby?

What items should I put on a baby registry?

What baby items will I really use?

All these are good questions and at least for me, the most helpful thing was to see someone else’s registry.

Clothing

At one point our registry was taken over by all the adorable baby outfits I had found and Matt made a good point that we may just get outfits and not items we really need so I simplified. So I suggest keeping it simple but also adding some cute outfits… how can you resist?! Especially in the newborn stage, though, Little Wonder stayed in pajamas most days because they are just so cozy and easy! I also read somewhere that you should put baby in one more layer than you are wearing and that’s their comfort level. I thought that was helpful!

Lounging

Your little newborn wonder will want to lounge around a lot. Newborns sleep in intervals of a few hours at a time that adds up to sleeping 16-18 hours a day! They are busy growing and transitioning to a completely different life outside the womb! Think about that big transition. So, I liked to have a few places to put Little Wonder during her lounge times or while I was doing something nearby. But for bedtime (below) or longer sleeping hours I followed the “ABCs of safe sleep: “Alone on the Back in a bare Crib.” and never left her unsupervised in a pillow or bouncer but only our bassinet which was portable.

MY-MUST HAVES:

  • Snuggle Me Organic Pillow – She was always so soothed by this pillow, which gave her the sense of being held and allowed my arms to be free! Made of organic materials – no worry of harmful chemicals.
  • BabyBjörn Bouncer – Simple design. Secures baby in with buckles. Easy to bounce with your foot while doing something and it worked out great whenever she had gas. It bounced the toots right out of her!
  • Cute muslin quilts and swaddles – my obsession. Breathable, natural, and organic muslin is free of harmful chemicals. Great for laying baby on the floor or in the grass or covering her up to stay warm while lounging.

Meal Time

Another popular activity will be eating. I exclusively breastfed for Little Wonder until we started trying solid foods around 6 months old, using a mix of purees and Baby-Led Weaning.

MY MUST-HAVES:

  • Haakaa Manual Breast Pump – Incredible if you’re breastfeeding. You suction it to the opposite breast baby is at and it catches the overflow milk that will come out of that breast…yes, the surprises, I know! But I used this almost every time I breastfed and rarely had to pump for a night bottle Matt would feed her or for a frozen breastmilk stockpile because I got enough with just this – but each woman and baby is different! Still worth a try, but a pump is also a breastfeeding must (check with your insurance, though, and see if they cover one) as well as storage such as breastmilk storage bags and though you can warm a bottle in a hot bowl of water, a bottle warmer is helpful!
  • Comotomo Baby Bottles – Love that these have a wide opening and can be hand washed with your usual kitchen sponge or put in the dishwasher. They also are soft and and are supposed to feel more like mother’s breast to baby and possibly help with bottle feeding. Lastly, there is a conversion kit to make it a sippy cup and I love this too, now!
  • High Chair– No fabric and cleans very easily, even in the dishwasher. Compact and fits on a chair and under our dining table lid sits not even there (also why I liked the neutral tones). Converts into booster seat as baby grows!
  • Silicone Baby Bibs – Another great invention. Cleans so easily. Love the colors. Love the food catching-pocket.
  • Muslin Washcloths – Gentle on baby’s skin for cleanup.
  • Silicone Baby Bowl and Spoon Set– comes with a great little spoon that’s easy for Little Wonder to either dip (one side) or scoop (other side) and the bowl suction cups to the high chair tray, table, at a restaurant… versatile!

Diapers

We opted for cloth diapering and LOVE IT. You can read all the details of why from this page and see my Top Ten Essentials for Cloth Diapering for my MUST HAVE’s of cloth diapering. Cloth diapers help you naturally care for baby and avoid harmful substances, save a TON of money, help save the environment and connect with nature and nostalgia. I also linked our favorite disposable diaper brands and wipes brands below too.

Bedtime

If you can call it “bedtime” at first since little one wakes up every few hours. Not everyone is able but Matt and I got an a pretty good sleep schedule where I would feed Little Wonder around 9pm and go to bed while Matt watched her as she slept and then around midnight he would feed her a bottle, sneak her into her bassinet beside ZZzzz-ing me and go to bed himself. That way I got 6-7 hours of sleep before she woke up to be fed again round 3am. Lifesaver. Or should I say “sleepsaver”. Check out Little Wonder’s Baby Nursery for nursery inso!

MY MUST-HAVES:

  • Bassinet – I loved having a bassinet because I could rest assured with the ABCs of Safe Sleep but still have Little Wonder right beside me. We actually have the Lotus Bassinet and love how portable it is from room to room and for traveling, but I linked some other Amazon options below.
  • White Noise Machine – Love this one and its adjustable levels of sound. Easy to pack. Great for helping baby sleep in a busy home. The Baby Shusher also was helpful when she was having a hard time sleeping sometimes and some parents swear by it.
  • Baby Monitor – At first I wanted a sound-only monitor because call me crazy, but I didn’t like the thought of the EMF waves close to baby. Matt, however wanted to see her and thought I would too – He was right as always! So we compromised on this one that has a setting where it only turns on when she cries and therefore, lower exposure to EMF. It has been a reliable and useful and extremely durable – Little Wonder has thrown it many times.
  • SwaddleMe Original Swaddle – Swaddling newborn really helps them sleep usually, as they are used to being cozy in the womb, not free in this great big world! These swaddles are really popular and velcro closed, so are very easy to learn and use. And when baby outgrows these, you can graduate to the HALO Sleepsack, which is half swaddle half blanket, but with its design it is safe for baby to sleep in, as opposed to a blanket which should not be placed in the crib until 15 or 18 months.
  • Crib – I love the design of this one and that it is Greenguard Gold Certified and it really sets off a mid century or boho baby nursery. It also converts FOUR WAYS into a toddler bed with the included conversion kit and even into a FULL SIZED BED! A budget option, though, and also natural wood is the IKEA Sniglar Crib.
  • Baby Crib Mattress – Ok, I loved the peace of mind you have with the design of this Greenguard Gold Certified breathable mattress. Really, the inside it so cool and looks like a piece of abstract art. It is 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer while the removable and washable cover has thousands of little holes. I pressed my nose against it and could breathe easily. Whew. It is a little pricey compared to other mattresses, but I thought it was worth it. I also have an extra mattress cover and a couple sets of muslin cotton sheets – the most lightweight and breathable.
  • Lotus Travel Crib – for one the go and safe playtime. I use this a lot more as a baby/toddler bed for travel. It is very lightweight, easy to pack and compact for car storage. It has backpack strap for carrying on the go! It also has been helpful when friends come over and need a place for their little wonder to nap – a second “crib” for them! It’s function as a pack and play also was useful at times, but I mostly let Little Wonder crawl around everywhere, but depending on your job, travel or home situation, a play yard could be a must for you. It is much less bulky than others and the only one Greenguard Gold Certified. And here is the sheet for it.

Bath Time

Splish Splash I was Taking a Bath… I play that song for Little Wonder during bath time a lot and it’s so fun! She loved the water – a future little pool fish.

MY MUST-HAVES:

  • Newborn to Toddler Tub – I went simple and cheap and I am glad I did! Light, easy to store and comes with a little sling for your tiny little wonder at first! It can fit over most sinks (I just used it beside the sink on the kitchen counter) and also can be put into a big tub to help your little wonder get used to the big tub and more splash time!
  • Baby Shampoo & Wash – I try to opt for more natural brands.
  • Spa Baby Natural Bath Sponge – WOW. I love this sponge – it gets so soft and is very gently on baby’s sensitive skin. A dreamy little sponge.
  • SheaMoisture 100% virgin coconut oil & murumuru baby lotion moisturizer – This smells like a dream. GET IT.
  • Stacking Cups Toy – All Little Wonder wants in the bath is cups, cups, cups. Get some cups! And these are such cute colors.

Take Care and Teething

I sometimes forget to clip Little Wonder’s nails until her tiny claws scratch me! Eek! Don’t forget some of these items you need to take care of your little wonder. And teething can be hard for little ones, but we can help them through it!

MY MUST-HAVES:

  • Thermometer – I have on hand this thermometer for quick checks and also a rectal thermometer, especially to get the most accurate temperature for your fragile little wonder who has a fever!
  • Baby Hair Brush and Comb Set – I love that these are wood (you know I am obsessed with wood things!) and the options of soft bristles, harder bristles and comb. Adorable.
  • Nasal Booger and Ear Cleaner – A Daddy pick and again, he was so good! So helpful in getting those stuck little boogies out! As you will see, I think Fridababy is a wonderful brand… because…
  • NoseFrida The Snotsucker – This is the upgrade to those bulb nasal suckers. I use this a lot and though at first it may seem gross to you, it was helpful to have more control by being able to use my inhale to vacuum out the snot – don’t worry there’s filters and you don’t get baby’s boogers in your mouth – haha!
  • All-Natural Saline Nasal Spray – a nasal spray can really help soften and unclog whatever is clogging up baby’s nose, especially during a cold.
  • Nail Clipper
  • Baby Finger Toothbrush There are a number of different types of toothbrushes for baby and toddler, but I have really liked the finger brush.
  • Baby Banz Earmuffs Infant Hearing Protection – if you will ever be in a loud space, these can be very good. We have used them at a large conference with a loud band and she slept right through it.

On the Go

Oh, the world of carseats and strollers. Too many options, but through all my research I decided I wanted to opt for a system made with less toxic materials and flame-retardant-free. And when we went to a large retail store to try out strollers and carseats, it helped narrow down our choices.

MY MUST-HAVES:

  • BRITAX B-Lively Travel System with B-Safe 35 Infant Car Seat – high safety ratings, less toxic materials and flame-retardant-free. Also compact and fairly light for a carseat/stroller system. I love that the carseat easily clicked in and out from the base that stays buckled into your car to the stroller with one easy button. Another thing I liked is the double cover, which came in really handy during Covid, when I took Little Wonder to the store but wanted to have her fully covered from germ exposure but I could still peek in through a little liftable flap!
  • Britax Marathon ClickTight Convertible Car Seat – This is just what Little Wonder has transitioned to as she outgrew her infant carseat. Same qualities as above and I love it so far and it should last her until it’s ok for her to sit buckles into a carseat – which means she is grown up (CRY.)
  • Diaper Bag – This one is adorable and what I want BUT I compromised and we got this one because Matt felt it was not as “girly”.
  • Car Seat and Nursing Cover – So very useful for on the go nursing. Also turned out to be useful during Covid when I wanted her covered up more in her carseat while out and about in the store.

Toys

What is going to be baby’s favorite toy? Cardboard boxes, silverware, pieces of paper and everything that is not an actual toy -Haha! Want to see what was Little Wonder’s favorite toy for a while? See the bottom of the list! :’D There are just so many adorable toys out there – especially wood toys! I can’t help myself… and neither can any of our family members.

MY MUST-HAVES:

  • The Play Gym by Lovevery – Adorable, wood and a not as many loud colors, and even those colors all have flaps that can cover or uncover them – fun for baby and a clean look for whatever room it is in. The bottom pad is quilted and soft. Very versatile through baby’s stages and comes with cards of how to use the different parts of the Play Gym for that stage of baby’s development. It also has a cover to turn it into a cute tent or cave. Little Wonder spent many, many hours here on her back or tummy, she rolled over for her first time on it and now likes the tent!
  • Summer Pop ‘n Jump Portable Activity Center – Rather than get a big bulky activity center, I opted for this one that could fold away and make for easy transfer to another room, outdoors or for travel. It lived up to all that, and Little Wonder loved playing in it while we made food in the kitchen or to come play and hang out on the deck with everyone. It has a little shade attachment too!
  • Stack Up Cup Toys – I said this in Bath Time, but she adores these.
  • Wood Blocks Set – Get a wonderful wood block set. This one is simple, but I also have my eye on some pretty cool ones I linked below. Blocks are so useful for development across many stages and though much simpler, building cities makes me reminisce of my Sims days – anyone, anyone?!
  • Take Along Tunes Musical Toy – Get some type of light up, sound-making toy for at least those rough car rides. You won’t regret it, as they become mesmerized.
  • Melissa & Doug Giddy Buggy Crawl-Through Tunnel – This may be for a later star, but I just have to say I love it! It stores flat too.
  • Bears For Humanity Bear– Cuddly, soft and a wonderful cause.
  • Fat Brain Toys pipSquigz Loops Teal – This suction cups to a table, great for restaurants or meal time!
  • Wipes – Analeigh’s all time favorite toy! :’D :’D :’D
