How to Make Your Own Whimsical Abstract Brushstroke Birthday Cake
Scrolling through Pinterest and pinning all kinds of ideas to my Pinterest boards in order to find magical and whimsical inspiration for Little Wonder’s first birthday party – a ONEderful First Birthday Party, I came upon this beautiful cake with abstract brushstrokes of icing and a fun color combination of teal and pinks, yellows and periwinkle blues. Just magical! It inspired the rest of my party decor and colors.
However, looking at this gorgeous cake, I wondered if I could do it myself… or if it would go down in Pinterest fails. Haha! And maybe you are wondering that, too, but I think you can do it!
Cheap. Easy. DIY. Magical.
So, what do you think? Here’s the inspiration and here is mine. A bit more homemade and whimsical, but I was SO HAPPY with the results. I did it all right here at my kitchen counter with the simplest ingredients.
You won’t believe it!
And Little Wonder liked it too!

Ingredients
2 boxes Duncan Hines Signature French Vanilla Cake Mix
(or favorite boxed white cake mix)6 large eggs
(as called for on above cake mix, your mix may be different)2/3 cup vegetable or canola oil
(as called for on above cake mix, your mix may be different)2 cups water
(as called for on above cake mix, your mix may be different)4 cans Butter Cream Frosting
(for the cake above I made this butter cream frosting recipe, which is more whipped cream-like in consistency)Unicorn Cake Topper or cake topper or candles that fit your theme!
Directions
- Bake boxed cake mixes according to instructions for four 9 in. round pans – you need three round cakes – the fourth leftover can be for snacking or you could go for a four layer cake!
- Let your round cakes cool COMPLETELY, otherwise icing will melt off.
- Get your cake stand and center your first layer of round cake on it*
- Take 1/2 jar of icing (~1/2 cup) and ice just the top of this layer of cake – this will be the icing sandwiched in-between your layers.
- Add another cake layer and another layer of icing.
- Add another cake layer and use one whole jar of icing (~1-1.5 cups) to ice the outside of the cake. Begin by applying a thin “crumb layer” that seals in the crumbs and then go back and put on a thicker layer of icing until the entire cake is covered.
- Get 5 small bowls and put about 1/4 cup or two good size dollops of icing in each bowl ready for food coloring*
- Make the following colors with your food coloring:
– PALE YELLOW (1 drop primary yellow)
– BLUE (1 drop primary blue)
– LIGHT TEAL (1 drop neon blue)
– FUCHSIA PINK (1 drop neon pink)
– LIGHT PINK (take a little bit of your fuchsia pink and add to your bowl of white icing until you have your desired light pink)* - Using a regular butter knife, GENTLY smear a dollop of icing onto your cake in varying areas, using varying colors. Just like you would smear cream cheese on a bagel, but perhaps gentler! After smearing a color, use the edge of the knife to make different types of stroke patterns in the icing.
- Apply patches of sprinkles as seen in the photo or in a design you like. I used chopsticks and tweezers for preciseness in placing them.
- Top with your cake topper or candles.
- Let the Birthday Wonder begin! YAY!
Notes
- It can also be helpful to take four strips of parchment paper and gently slide them slightly underneath this first cake layer on all four sides so that when you start icing your cake, the icing does not get on the cake stand and you will have a perfectly clean cake stand after!
- Have some extra icing set aside in case your color turns out not how you want it and you have to redo or in case you need to lighten a color with more white icing.
