What If My Significant Other Does Not Want to Use Cloth Diapers?

I am definitely the crazy one in our marriage and the one with big dreams … but trouble following through. (It’s just that I have so many dreams!) Matt is my wonderful other half that dreams with me and is my best creative coach in helping me achieve my dreams!!! This blog would not be happening without him, as he does many behind the scenes work, just like he did in our dreamy baby nursery.

When it came to me suggesting that we use cloth diapers, he thought I was crazy – a dreamy girl stuck in a nostalgic world of cloth diapering romanticism, forgetting how hard and ridiculous it would be to cloth diaper. Even after I broke it down to him and dropped that wonderful reason of saving a ton of money in front of him like a carrot on a stick in front of a stubborn mule, he was still hesitant. He was afraid we would be left with a pile of, well…

I will admit – his fear of us being left in a pile of poo was a true fear when it comes to his knowledge of my leaving things around the house in piles. (Love youuuuu :p) I tend to start a project, be really energized at first and putter out, leaving that wonderful project in multiple piles around the house.

Anyone else?

If you are having trouble convincing your significant other of your dream to use cloth diapers for your little wonder. How about you start here and see if any of these reasons get your stubborn mule to budge:

Don’t forget to hear them out and relate with having hesitancies.

This whole parenting thing can be overwhelming for both of you. Sometimes at the same time and sometimes at different times, sometimes for the same things and sometimes for different things. That’s the beauty of sharing it together and helping each other. And as I have said in other cloth diapering posts, even though I excitedly told Matt about my desire to cloth diaper, I ended up feeling overwhelmed too. So, it’s good to share you reasons why but to also be real with your own hesitancies or what could be hard. They are more likely to see that you understand what you are getting into.

Break down how you think it will fit into your schedule.

A fear a lot of people understandably have with cloth diapering is if they have enough time or if it will fit into their busy schedule. But cloth diapers have become so usable and similar to disposables in their design and the time it takes to use cloth diapers is almost the same. Even the time to wash and dry them – the brunt of the time – is not that much more. Here are some helpful post I made to break down some of this:

Lastly, but perhaps most importantly, MAKE A DEAL!

Do you always hear “Let’s Make a Deal!” just like they say it on the game show. I’d shared my cloth diapering dream. I’d given my solid reason, even the money saving one. Matt was still hesitant. So, I made a deal! And it’s been working ever since.

My deal?

That I would do all the significant poo handling and all the washing – the elements that most likely make someone hesitate to do cloth diapering – while the rest we would share in. It works for us. He does his fair share of diaper changing and I take on the quick task of poo tossing and washing.

Maybe you can make a deal and win your significant other over to the cloth diapering dark side. (Muahaha!)
