Wonders

A Flower’s Pose

No stack of pancakes or corner of your pillow smells better than a country morning a 5 a.m. Of course, I would not have known this myself had not a certain someone woke me up because he wanted to show me something.

I could not fall back to sleep for some reason at 5 a.m. one of these past mornings. As I tiptoed downstairs and glanced out the window, the morning drew me out with its gentle color. The next thing I knew, I was on my bike pedaling down the gravel road. God wanted to show me something.

The sun was not quite up yet, but the delicate, pink clouds told of its coming. The only sounds were the birds singing from the fields to greet it. The air around me and to the distance held a deep morning fog.  Dew was heavy on the grass and the dampness danced around me in the breeze — a refreshing wake up call from the artist who wanted to show me his work.

As I rode down the mile, a song came naturally to my voice:

“Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him all creatures here below.Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts.Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.”

Our Father deserves all praise from everything — for us to lift our faces to his in pure awe and praise of the magnificent glory he shines down on us. This is what he wanted to show me.

With the colors of his blood red sun rising on my back and my breath taken away by its beauty, God drew my eyes to something small. Oh, how I love when he does this! I looked down to the side of the road and beheld the small wonder of flowers waking up. Scattered in the grass were little blue and white flowers — some still closed from the night and others beginning to open to the morning light. Then God spoke to me.

He said, “Look at how my flowers respond to my light: In the night when my light is gone, they close. Yet, in the morning they cannot resist to open to my light.” And this brought me to wonder.

We all have a desire to, essentially, to worship something — to open up to something’s “glory”. We give ourselves to it in hopes that we will be made much of, that we will be seen, that we will have security, that we will have acceptance. However, how often has that failed to fully come when we look to some things? We are left disappointed and empty or searching for something more, just that little bit more. It is because we turn to idols, things other than who we were made to worship — God. He created us with this desire to worship Him, and we often distort it. I am so guilty of this. I forget time and time again and go searching among the dirt and thorns for satisfaction. I constantly need guiding back.

Praise Him who lovingly takes our hand to bring us back. Him who wipes the dirt and grime of our futile searching off our hands and feet and faces. Him who bandages and heals the scratches and wounds underneath. Our Father, who reminds us of his love with the simplest wonders!

Looking to the flowers, they display what God intended. In the night the flowers clasp tightly in their close, protecting themselves from any trickery or danger. They wait patiently for the morning, knowing that no matter what, their light will come. As the light begins to shine, it’s almost as if they start singing with arms wide open and faces upturned to their life-giving sun! No gust of wind or rainstorm can shake them from their praising pose, they remain open to their one and only.

Jesus is our one and only. We desire to fling our arms wide open and turn our faces to the Son of God, our light of glory! He gives us light and light for eternity. Darkness cannot exist in the light, the light drives it away.

“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.” – 1 John 1:5

It is in the light of the Son that we can be free, that we can dance among the flowers. When our faces are turned to him with our eyes locked, nothing can shake us and life is evermore beautiful! When the darkness of the world seems to envelop us, we must cling to our hope. Our Son never leaves us; even in the dark he is there.

“The LORD watches over you—  the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.” -Psalm 121: 5-6

To God, “Even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. -Psalm 139:12  What is more, we can look to and cling to our hope of his coming in full glory. The sun will be of no comparison to Jesus’ coming glory on the day of his return to gather his children in his arms.

“Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.” -Mark 13:26

“For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.” -1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

“And the city (in heaven) has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.” -Revelation 21:23

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.” Isaiah 60:1
